On this week's installment of BSG production, our team worked to derive more visual aesthetics of the world with better drawings and references in order to begin blocking and modeling in the near future. This week was centered around several key environments and characters, and here is what I contributed.
Last week, during our aesthetic discussions, we found an illustration of a flying saucer with three spinning crescent moon pieces.
This ship's three segments, plus our interest in using triangles as a sort of font, really empowered us to use the repeated pattern of three to create the aesthetics of the ship.
Using these larger concepts of making things in three, I hastily sketched out and mapped out a rough concept for what the abduction bay and ship's outside should look like. We want the flying saucer to have spinning pieces that counter rotate from the ship's main spinning part, with yellow accent pieces and lights traveling around the rim. The abduction ray is a spinning piece mounted into the ceiling, with energy in columns from around the room feeding into the device. Each blade will look like a glowing solar array from a solar panel, and the column of light will fill the room, allowing for a dramatic silhouette lighting of the aliens as their first look. Since we are using triangles as a repeated motif, we chose to use arches with a slight angular top to stay consistent while making the space slightly less threatening.
This coming week, I will aim to block out the space in greater detail, as well as create a more complex illustration of the abduction ray device. Given feedback from our instructors, we are also going to delve deeper in the backstories of both the aliens and our main protagonist, so that we are able to create a more informed character profile and mannerisms for them. Signing off for now, nanu nanu.
